127,000 OLDER AUSTRALIANS WAIT FOR CARE
Julie Collins MP
The Morrison Government sent out a taxpayer-funded letter trying to spruik its achievements for older Australians in aged care just days before Christmas and weeks after it was revealed 127,000 older Australians were waiting for a home care package.
Estimates today confirmed $128,000 of taxpayer funding was expended on the letter to 93,000 older Australians.
The letter highlighted the Liberal Government’s woefully inadequate response for older Australians waiting for home care package.
Incredibly, the letter was only sent to older Australians who were already receiving a home care package.
At a time when some older Australians are waiting more than two years for a home package they have been approved for without care, this is an extraordinary waste of money.
The letter follows an $8.2 million dollar taxpayer-funded advertising campaign last year that encouraged older Australians to access home care packages even as the Government knew waiting times for care were blowing out.
The Abbott/Turnbull/Morrison Government has misled vulnerable older Australians again and again and given them false hope about accessing care at home even as the waitlist for packages ballooned.
What’s worse – it has wasted taxpayer dollars on this expensive exercise.
The Government must be honest with older Australians instead of trying to pat themselves on the back with taxpayer-funded letters and advertising.
Older Australians are entering residential aged care or even emergency departments instead of receiving their approved home care package.
Scott Morrison cut $1.2 billion from aged care in his first Budget as Treasurer - backing in his $500 million cut in MYEFO.
After five years, three Ministers and years of cuts this Government called a Royal Commission into Aged Care.
Older Australians deserve better and won’t be fooled by Scott Morrison and the Liberals’ chaos, who have done nothing but cut aged care funding for years.
