TURNBULL GOVERNMENT GIVES UP DEFENDING HOME CARE CRISIS
THE HON JULIE COLLINS MP
The Turnbull Government continues to ignore older Australians, failing to defend the unacceptable waitlist for access to home care packages.

On the eve of the first anniversary of the introduction of consumer-driven home care packages, there are more than 100,000 older Australians waiting for care.

After initially failing to nominate one MP to speak on a Labor motion condemning the current waitlist for packages, the Turnbull Government speakers who did end up making it to the chamber did nothing to address this crisis.

Labor speakers highlighted the harrowing stories of older Australians waiting more than a year for care, with many sadly passing away without receiving a package.

The Turnbull Government is failing the task of caring for older Australians.

The Government committed at MYEFO to address this issue in May’s Budget, but for older Australians waiting for care this will be too late.

The Minister for Aged Care has known about this urgent situation for almost a year but has done nothing of substance to stop the growing list.

Without intervention the waiting list will continue to grow, with more and more vulnerable older Australians forced into limbo without care.

The Turnbull Government must immediately act to address the growing crisis in aged care with 100,000 older Australians waiting for care.

Labor has repeatedly called on the Turnbull Government to fix this crisis as the waiting list continues to grow.

Older Australians waiting for a home care package deserve better.
